Sketchbook pages

Some recent sketching in the Worcester Art Museum.

♥ I love drawing in the museum. Summer session at WAM is in full swing, + I like taking time after lunch to sketch some of the collection. I enjoy teaching part time while doing freelance work. It's great to have conversations with teens that are serious about pursuing art school.

I don't have much spare time this summer, but I'm still struggling to get a decent set of Holga photos to print well. I think the people in the dark room laugh at me because Holgas are such basic cameras, and I can barely load it

the Holga I have {Xmas gift from Andy}

If you didn't get a chance to see our show "Atomic Hearts" in Boston this summer, you can see a selection of my pieces @

the Secret Society in Worcester opening this Monday, August 3rd - September 4th.

Or at the Fourth Wall Project in Boston next Friday, August 7th

Recently watched both Nana movies with my sister Now it's time to get into some "Honey & Clover"

New chair, new hat

new shoes, old cat

Some new oxfords from London, a snazzy new chair from 242, and a straw hat. Lindsay says I look like Madeline when I wear it, and that makes me happy.

my chives are growing like crazy! we were able to cut some up for seasoning - and they taste great!

Atomic Hearts Show Photos

Joey reads our interview in ArtScope

Last night was the Artist Talk for our show Atomic Hearts - we had a great time, thanks to everyone who came! Here are some shots of the empty gallery space; before and after the session.

After, we all went out for sushi at Genki-Ya where they specialize in the most unusual flavor combinations! I got the "Genki Vegetable Roll" which consisted of mushrooms, sweet potato tempura, cream cheese and banana. It was possibly the greatest thing I've ever eaten.

Andy's work

I'm very busy lately, between classes, teaching workshops and working on my new paintings series.
I'll be posting more art pieces from the show this week.

My youngest sister leaves for England today! She is traveling with a group of exchange students for two weeks, crossing through the UK from London, to Ireland, then to Scotland. I'm so happy for her - I had the opportunity to see Ireland and No. Ireland in 2001, and it changed my life!

Friend, writer, and amazing world traveler, Joan Gage, gave us this very cool piggy toy from her recent trip to Africa. He squishes completely flat like Gak when you throw him, and pops up like normal!

Sweet Boots

Sweet Boots // archival prints available soon // 10"x 8"

Lately I've been obsessed with lace-up oxfords, 40s-style wingtips, and other-wise spectator shoes. I find when I just doodle randomly, I draw lots of shoes! Does that mean something?

An old SVA professor of mine, Thomas Woodruff, used to doodle alphabets in all different fonts while on the phone with someone in his office. Some how that seems to smack more of artistic genius than doodling Jeffrey Campbells ...

In the mean time, I'm planning on adding a store to this blog. I'm currently trying to figure out the pros and cons of configuring a store into Blogger or if I should utilize the store on my portfolio website ... hmm??
{I'm open to any reccomendations!}

Here is a recent interview I did for Ape On The Moon; a fantastic contemporary illustration blog run by super cool Alex Mathers.

Thanks, Alex!

PROCESS || After drawing the image in blue pencil, I put down a layer of very bright acrylic blue. Then a layer of gloss, then after it dries a layer of oil. It really allows me to let the acrylic paint glow through the oil, which tends to be darker and less saturated. Then when it dries, a layer of fixative, then some colored pencil.

I posted a little bit about it back in April

ARTSCOPE MAGAZINE

Before our show opened, Andy and I were interviewed by ArtScope in May. It came out this week - which is perfect because the gallery's next available visiting hours are this Friday. We're excited about our Artist Talk this July 21st (a Tuesday) from 7 - 8pm! Hope to see you there!

Andy, Lindsay, Allison + myself will be briefly talking about the show and our process..es... processss.. okay the plural of process. { My writer friends are ashamed of me, I'm sure ... }

I think I'd like to work with this vector version more and create some t-shirts!

Stay Happy + Art For Five

done as a quick demo for the Photoshop class
I'm currently teaching at the Museum

{they are 11 - 13 years old, so we had a good laugh over this}

Here is a picture of the super, ginormous, mega marshmallows we brought to our 4th of July picnic this weekend. They were literally too big to eat (and I never thought I'd say that about anything marshmallow related.... okay, except the Stay-Puft Man in Ghostbusters)

ART FOR FIVE

I am about to receive a super cool piece of artwork by friend and amazing artist Jennifer Lewis. So, in keeping with the project, I'm upholding my part of it and posting the same for anyone who would like me to make them something!

I will make something for the first 5 people who comment "I'm IN!" and who commit to do the same on their blog. Just read below and if you feel up to the task, and copy the following...

  1. Whatcha get is whatcha get.
  2. What I create will be just for you, with love.
  3. It’ll be done this year (2009).
  4. I will not give you any clue what it’s going to be. It will be something made in the real world, not something cyber. It may be weird or beautiful.
  5. In return, all you need to do is post this text on your blog and make 5 things for the first 5 to respond to your blog post.
  6. Send me your mailing address after I contact you.

Come on, don't be shy! Even if you don't think you're the creative type, you might end up surprising yourself - and making 5 other people very happy too!

If you don't comment 'I'm IN!' I'll assume you are just stopping by to leave a lovely note for me.

This continues the chain from MUCH LOVE, to Brandi Milne, to Jenny Lewis, to me, to you!

Hanabi + Fireflowers

We had a fantastic 4th of July yesterday! Ayaka and Yuka made some teru teru bouzu, { てるてる坊主 } since the weather here in New England has been nothing but white sky and drizzle ... and magically, they worked! The sky opened up and it was a breezy, lovely 70° in Newton.

We had a great picnic (hotdogs, yakiudon, pinenuts with fruit, and GIANT marshmallows)
Alex was the only one brave enough to tackle a giant pink marshmallow - it took about 45 minutes to even get toasty, it was like roasting a softball.

If you're in the New England area, and check out the 4th on the Charles River with the Boston Pops, I'd reccomend trying Newton, MA at least once. (Andy thinks I say that because John Krasinski (JIM) and BJ Novak (RYAN) from "The Office" are from Newton and go back from time to time, but seriously - it's worth it)

sometimes being an illustrator gets lonely, working in your studio all the time - days like this are really special

Flash Gordon Series

Flash! Ah-aaaah! ♫ ♪ ♩

I have an affinity for this movie, and the comic strip as well. There are a number of things that really come together; the saturated colors, the silliness, Max Von Sydow + Timothy Dalton are just too cool for school ... etc (maybe someday I'll get Dalton to do my voicemail ... )

After some recent fidgeting with the coding for this blog, I added expandable posts - let's see how it works!
