Pirates on Nook + Wizard World

(black and white for now look for the color version this summer)

I'm told there seems to be a shifting error with the pages?
If they are still loading far to the right, I'll look into it ASAP

ALSO: You can get Pirates of Mars Vol. 1 25% OFF
with coupon code CYBERMAY

And I'm excited to announce Andy and I will be appearing at Wizard World Con New England this September 17 - 18 (the Events list has been updated over there) at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston.

I'll be selling Pirates of Mars art, prints and copies of the book, as well as art from Sherlock Holmes and the Southampton Horror.

øThey asked me for a headshot, which I have very few of, so I put this thing together.

Oh! and I got a hair cut!

hm, ... does this headshot make me look like I do science and not comics?

Benedict Cumberbatch / Sherlock Holmes

Hey friends,

Andy and I have just wrapped issue 1 of our Sherlock Holmes and the Southampton Horror comic, and wouldn't you know it, I was commissioned by a great patron to create a Sherlock Holmes piece....

Art All State 2011 Part 2

Day 2 is when the students finish their installations, host an opening for family and friends, and tear down the work they created just 24 hours before.  I think it's a good lesson in not holding on to your art too tightly.

 BEFORE

AFTER

It was really nice to see the students work so well together.

Typically, people with A-type personalities will dominate the group - not because they enjoy pushing people around, but they are people who like getting started, and waiting for everyone else to catch up usually makes them antsy.

There were a few personalities in the room, but everybody spoke up with their own ideas, which was good.

They made a giant web out of rubber bands and suspended stuff from it!  All the "strings" you see there are actually braids of rubber bands!

Here are 2 more of the 6 classrooms:

Art All State 2011

Hey friends!

Today marked the start of Art All State 2011 - in their 24th year!  The last two years I've been an Artist/Mentor but this time around I'm just observing and photographing the process.

In 2009 I was also asked to do the annual tee shirt design - [2009 here...]

Unfortunately, because I've been teaching teens so long, it's SUPER HARD for me not to just blurt out "YOU GUYS SHOULD TOTALLY DO THIS" etc etc - when the whole point is for the students to come to a consensus themselves.

But it's great fun, and I'm looking forward to what they create from simply:

  • rubberbands
  • cardboard
  • muslin cloth
  • tape

The idea is to take limiting materials and transform a room into a huge installation art piece.  They work together in ways they typically don't in regular art class.

From my experience with teens, you kind of have to tell them directly if an idea isn't working.  Because artistic teens are passionate people, they tend to want to do projects that are about self-expression and get really conceptual.  They seem to be worried that just doing something literal isn't conceptual enough.  That artwork needs to say something.

I don't feel that way at all - the best installations I've ever seen have been all about simplicity.  For instance when the Whitney had a Mario Bros. room - and you walked into LEVEL 1.  You felt really tiny and all the art was pixelated.  Really cool.

Teens are like that - there is a reason why they like to write their names over and over again in different fonts.  They are focused on finding their own identity.  It's natural.

But there is nothing wrong with it - and it's all about their own learning process.  It's hard for me not to put my own spin on it being an artist myself.

I'll post what they make tomorrow!  We'll see!

Star Wars Day

for Worcester Magazine

This weekend the Higgins Armory Museum hosted "Star Wars Day" complete with official Stormtroopers and light-sabre duels.  The Higgins regularly hosts fencing and sword-play lessons so these guys were really, really good!

Now, these Stormtroopers weren't just any dudes in costumes, they were seriously  the real uniforms complete with high-tech voice devices so they could say ...

"These ARE the droids we're looking for!"
 to kids asking for pictures

 Sorry about that pole...
but I love this picture - that kid MADE his own costume!

Wired Magazine - James Bond

Hey friends!

If you check out the June '11 of Wired Magazine, you can find one of my illustrations accompanying a super cool Bond-girl puzzle.  They pull out all the Js the As the Ms the Es (so on so forth) from the names of the Bond girl characters and you have to figure out the names from the jumble.

Thanks so much to Art Director Alice Cho and Designer Tim Gruneisen for working with me!

ZombieBomb! Dead Not Dead

Hey friends!

I just realized, shame on me, that I never published a blog post about a great anthology I took part in last Halloween. ZombieBomb! art directed by my pal and great artist Adam Miller is now a 6 - no wait, 7? - volume horror anthology from Terminal Press.

I was lucky to get in on this thing at the ground floor, and very happy Adam asked me to illustrate a story. You can find limited quantities of the first volume (the issue I was in) at Terminal's website HERE.

Here are some images I did for Steve Jone's short story...
