Things from Japan / Package Design

Sometimes you find a post under "Draft" that is more than a year old,
and it reminds you of random, wonderful things!

So here is a year old post I found, I don't remember writing this, but here you go :)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Hit a personal goal this month, so got these - the packaging is fabulous

lovely and generous Christmas gifts from Mayako

Billee brought us white chocolate Kit Kats - Mos Burger edition!

Something that fascinates me about Japanese package design is just how easily removable the items are.  But that is also a comment on the culture of Japanese people themselves, the threat of theft seems to be much less.

I was amazed at how easily the bottoms of my ink refills could be easily opened and sealed shut again.  Any one could walk in a store, slip out the products and book it - but I don't think that is as much of a problem as it is here in the US.

Dora

a recent commission by a favorite patron

Andy and I were up way too late last night watching a marathon of the Planet of the Apes movies.  They are somewhat bleak, and if it wasn't for the pleasant lighting and colorful costumes, it would be like, Walking Dead-type bleakness.

I need to follow up movies like that with an episode of Ren + Stimpy or something.

Super busy around here lately, have so much I wanted to blog, it's getting pretty backed up.

I've been trying to study as much Japanese as possible in preparation for my trip in March, and I find the more I study, the slower my English becomes!  Whoa!

I don't know how bilingual people do it; being able to shut down one language and start thinking in another.  Amazing!!

Anyone have any tips on how to do that?  Thanks!

Elucidation

Happy Valentine's Day everybody!

I love love.

I hope you do, too, because the whole cynical I-hate-valentines is so glib.

Even if they haven't told you yet,
even if you haven't met them yet,
somebody out there loves you.

Valentine's Day Card for the Boston Phoenix

Every year for the past 3 or so, the Boston Phoenix has included me in their
Clip-N-Share Valentine's Day Cards.

You can find it in print this week, clip one out for your significant other,

I love seeing what the other artists make!
It's a really fun assignment and I look forward to it :)

Here's my contribution:

PROCESS

Usually I don't work 100% digital, but tried it out anyway.

I really liked this coloring, actually - it was simple but not too flat. I thought maybe I should've stopped here, but got excited with Color Dodge...

Tried out a blue-hue...
