Desktop Wallpaper | Wood Sprites

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Hey friends,

Here is the first of hopefully many in a desktop wallpaper series I hope to post often.
I recently finished two commissioned paintings, which I'll post soon, as well.

It's been a busy week, but I think if I wasn't busy I wouldn't know what to do with myself.
It's getting down to crunch time for our June gallery show, and Andy and I are trying to balance all this work with a normal social life. But that's the way it always is, right?

Feeling great - started working out harder, drinking more water and getting some sun. Ahh spring

Fashion Friday

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I've been toying around with the idea of doing a daily or weekly illustration of what I'm wearing. Before I started to post, I decided I'd at least work up around 30 sketches and set them on scheduled posts so I could keep up with other things!

Unfortunately I'm so busy with other projects ... [that and sometimes what I'm wearing really isn't all that interesting] ... So instead of doing THAT - I'm going to post Friday Fashion drawings of ... well, what anybody is wearing.

I've been dying for a romper and a cloche hat; and after scouring my local thrift markets for months, still came up dry.

One of my favorite eBay dealers.

After my bills, I had about $20 left in my monthly budget for fun stuff. Eek. Was able to get a F21 cobalt blue circle skirt, grey cardigan AND cloche hat for a grand total of $15.67. Alright!

French for "bell"

I really adore the cloche look - probably from my love of 1920's fashion illustration and whatnot.

Painting previews

Hey friends!

Here are some paintings I've been working on for our 2-person gallery show in Boston this June.

My half of the show is divided up into a couple of series of works; Luchadores, Spacemen + 1930's era Adventurers, all depicting children in various uniform. Some progress:

We have a Mil Mascaras mask in our living room, too! Can you tell he's our favorite?

Had a really nice time hiking with my dad and younger sister a while back. The cold weather has lasted a horrendous 9 months here in MA - so lately I've been addicted to sunshine!

Casa Ramirez + sketches

Sketches from the plane ride

The space kid and the caballero are sketches for upcoming paintings

Casa Ramirez

The nicest people in the world. They offer classes in culture, language, folk art, history, Dia de los Muertos, and will even tell you when the latest lucha match is. I noticed in the Japanese fashion magazines I read, that there are number of lucha-motifs goin' on - on backpacks, keychains, necklaces and socks. Woohoo!
Andy and I have always loved South American art + culture. The PreColombian wing of the museum we work at has an excellent Mayan collection. [And it reminds me of Nancy Drew: Secret of the Scarlet Hand haha]

I got lots of Day of the Dead souvenirs : a beautiful armadillo tin painting, skeleton card, Lotteria cards, a handmade flower, lucha toys, a string of vinyl flags, and a sugar skull mold!

Choosing this vinyl was hard -
they had lots of amazing prints

>> Not pictured is a really cool luchadores toy that involved a plastic ring with rubber bands around the edges and tiny wrestlers you could fight with. No toxico, of course

Hey friends,

I've decided to start creating wallpapers and other fun stuff for you to download free on this blog. They'll be lots of new ones of the new series I'm working on, as well as some recent work. The wallpapers will be in all different resolutions, and in PSP and iPhone sizes as well.
I don't own an iPhone, but if I did, it would be pretty decked in sweet art, haha

This is the TV at my Aunt's house with the hearing-impaired captions turned on for my grandmother.
Obviously, something was wrong on the other end of the tube.

New Drawing + Japan stuffs

Here is a preview of the latest piece for the 242 Boston show. After it's digitally colored, I'm going to print it on cottonrag paper and silkscreen in some fun graphic shapes. There are 4 color variations and the original drawing will be available at the show as well.

I'm thinking none of the pieces at the show [with the exception of the largest oil paintings] will go over $200. Gotta move some art!

Had a really nice time at Porter Exchange yesterday; I picked up lots of instant miso, Pretz and tiramisu cremes, as well as 3 J-fashion magazines. All 3, Zipper, Jille + Mini featured the SAME cardigan or pair of shoes - and I think all 3 are from different publishers.

... lunch ...

TokyoBunnie is having a giveaway tonight!

It remains one of my favorite art/vinyl toy/kawaii culture blogs.

Working at home all day on pieces for June show ... not excited about being sidelined with this awful antibiotic.

More Houston trip, play list + portrait

A recent portrait commission for a local client. Her kids are super cute.

Plane Ride Play List

Texas bluebonnets, rodeo cookie cake, souvenirs + carry-on bag

One of my hidden talents is fitting many things into a small space - and for that reason I love to pack. I know it's weird, but it's the designer in me. I also LOVE making playlists and mix tapes. Like John Cusack says in "High Fidelity", making one is an art.

Okay, I see ads for Sonic all the time - and the nearest one to us is 210 miles away!

So, when Faith told me there was one right around the corner from her, I got pretty excited.

The CherryLime-ade is tops

You know it's SPRING when ...

... THESE happen :

My favorite things about April!

The windows are open, the apartment is clean and I'm working on lots of new paintings for the 242 show coming up this June. It would be perfect except for the tax filing part. But it's really lovely to finally see a warm blue sky after a 9 MONTH LONG Massachusetts winter. Seriously. It was 24 deg. back in November '08!

We went to a great show in Boston put together by our friend Bamcat. It was most excellent. Coincidentally, right across the city at Emerson, Andy was supposed to be a guest speaker for a panel, but they neglected to tell him - so we went out for Thai without a clue.

Alison's work

I picked up some more tiny plants for my smidgen of a garden, this time some edible plants. Basil + Chives. [Our cat's name is Basil, an ode to Sherlock Holme's actor Basil Rathbone.] So far they are looking pretty good {knock on wood} and I haven't managed to kill them!
I think Gallagher has a line about planting like
"If you water it and it dies, it's a plant, if you dig it up and it grows back, it's a weed."

Painting inside all day! Need to get out for a run with all this sunshine
