More from HeroesCon

I think this was my fav commission of the show next to Steve's Big Barda, which he got inside the Jack Kirby Artist edition book.  Above is "Anna Mendoza" for D

Going to miss the hotel's fruit water in the lobby every morning... Sigh... So good

My piece sold well in the auction, which was a relief as I waited with nervous tension in the back.  (*that's not me holding it, it's one of the awesome ladies that walk around showing the art as it comes up on the block - this year's theme for their costumes was WonderWoman, of course!)

More updates soon!!

Awesome dad right there as Tina

Joe snapped this picture on Friday, and by Sunday we were pretty much cleared out!

Many thanks to all who commissioned me for artwork, bought Pirates of Mars (we sold out!!) and Frankenstein, got prints and original art.

So immensely appreciated

But the con highlight had to have been meeting JJ Kahrs and the lovely Katie for the first time!!  We've worked together for years on Pirates of Mars but never met in person… until now!

And it was epic.

Charlotte, NC / HeroesCon

We made our way from MA to Philly, then from PE to Charlotte.

We had a wonderful dinner with friends and watched a film shoot behind the restaurant!

They used live rounds of gun fire into a fake restaurant - it was so rad!!  The bad guys were easily recognizable from afar, with their long braids and elaborate body tattoos.

Made it to our hotel near the convention center and set up for the first day of HeroesCon.

Sitting behind Kelly Sue, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, so we have great neighbors.

Worked steadily from before the con opened and don't finish all my commissions yet but will tomorrow.
If you'd like some art stop by and I'll put you on the list!

Got to draw this cutie as Elsa but she originally suggested the ogre!  Too cool

Frozen is definitely a big request this year - my third one this week!

My first time in NC, and I have to say I really like it here!  It's hot and steamy but the people are nice and the food is good - all you need in a great community.

See you tomorrow!

Helmutt character designs

I think getting the chance to design Helmutt for the Worcester Art Museum has to be one of my favorite assignments ever.

It's also my first time working within a public space (apart from murals) and how visitor's engage with a character in a broad range of ways.

Here are the designs for the standees that were placed in the KNIGHTS! exhibition.

The museum director and the gallery designer wanted to make Helmutt blend into the walls so as not to distract from the existing pieces and mess with the flow of the exhibition.

It's important that the character be almost like a friendly ghost that appeals to all ages, doesn't talk down to the visitor or seem like strictly 'children's museum-only' material.

A hard balance to strike but the input of a great team really lead these designs in a good direction.

I think Helmutt's character is also very progressive in terms of gender identification.

While the dog identifies as a boy, he will frequently show up in historical dresses (as seen in the 16th century Spanish dress above) or pink or with other dashes of femininity.

I also designed the "Paws Off" / Do not Touch signage in the gallery

I also did all the graphics for Helmutt on the iPads - not the coding, that was Tim

I also designed the Art Cart vinyls in the space.

Neal is demonstrating how a gauntlet functions, and what chain mail feels like.

I did 2 small pieces for Helmutt's House as well

  • a gouache painting of puppy Helmutt with his first master, Lord Beckwythe (holla, Higgins Armory)
  • a riff on Norman Rockwell's cover (a piece that is in the WAM collection, too)
  • and a small colored pencil of Helmutt & pals

Me & Helmutt

Have an interview in Access Magazine next month - the Worcester Art Museum's publication - here's a preview :)

In other news, there is so much happening right now it's insane.

Between getting ready for North Carolina, my birthday is next week (29!!!), working on two new paintings (Batgirl + No Country for Old Men), it's bananas around the studio.

Also!! Getting ready to work on Pirates of Mars again as well as more of Frankenstein:1921!

Whoa!  No sleep, just art and coffee.

Wee! So excited that Andy and I will be guests at this year's HERO'S CON in Charlotte, North Carolina!
