Pirates of Mars : Extra Loot sneak peek

Hello friends!

JJ has written a wonderfully exciting and funny, brand-new 8 page story we'll be running in a supplemental issue called "EXTRA LOOT"

You'll be able to buy this for just 99cents via Comixology the first week of July!  (if you don't use that service we'll have it available in other places - more on that soon)

If you have been a loyal fan of Pirates of Mars since it's inception many years ago we want to give those people some NEW content!!!

I'll be posting more Pirates of Mars stuff really soon including David's Nami in Space painting - wee!  I've been struggling to find the time with lots of projects converging simultaneously.  Phew!

The Wendy Project - cover art

After a few months of work with the wonderful ladies at EMET Comics - Editor in Chief Maytal Gilboa and writer Melissa Jane Osborne, I'm excited our title "The Wendy Project" is launching next week!

I'll be talking more about this project soon, including more process work for interiors.  This project looks very different from my other comic, "Pirates of Mars", and it was fun for me to work in two different styles.

Here is the cover I did, step by step:

Wave Warrior Series 1

While back Mowgli Surfwear contacted me to create some Japanese-inspired designs.  You should check out their wonderful Instagram (as well as the store) and you can see great pics of their trip to Tokyo.

American surf wear and hiking gear is really popular over there - you can find "select shops" like Cher and Beaver that specialize in them, respectively.
I love this photo of Christian (the person whose likeness you see here) taken in Japan by Jesse Stopnik:

If I could be around for any past concert, my top pick would have to be QUEEN either in Montreal (1981) or LiveAid in England (1985)

Hannya Danger for Mowgli Surfwear

*They named it that and it couldn't be more perfect

The Hannya mask used in Noh theater portrays the souls of women who have become demons due to obsession or jealousy.

Here's a design I did for Mowgli Surfwear recently - I always get a charge out of seeing my work on a real person instead of a monitor.

It's the same warm fuzzy feeling I get when I see a painting someone bought on their wall.

I make lots of images that just kind of go off into the ether - it's nice knowing they still exist somewhere and are being enjoyed by other people :D

** If you have a piece by me, send me a pic of it!
(Even if it's tiny, or in the garage, that's ok, too)

I am crazy about these tees, (I didn't design these, the bones surfer dude is by Sandy Hoffman) and nothing makes me feel like warm weather is here like hand-dyed tees.

When I went to summer camp as a kid we always ended up doing tie-dye during crafts time.  Wish I had known back then the cool stuff you could do with it!

Dead Right Blu-Ray cover art

A recent Blu-Ray cover for a very nice client out in California for his film.

Here was the process:

As you can guess, the movie isn't for the faint of heart

I did the sketches digitally to make sure it fell in line with the DVD specs.  It's actually hard for me to draw free hand on my tablet - I really don't do that ... like ever.

I typically use my tablet just for coloring and assembling images.  Actually looking at the last image I think it would've been really cool to do this cover as a silk screen!

If only silk screens didn't take me so long :/

This piece actually sold (before the show opened - wow) but I will be offering prints of this via Nuvango and INPRNT :)

The Wendy Project sneak peek 2

Another look at the art for The Wendy Project, soon to be released by EMET COMICS.  The story is told through Wendy's sketchbook journal, which was a great idea by the writer Melissa Jane Osborne, so the art has license to get a bit experimental.  I really enjoy getting work in two different styles on both Pirates of Mars and The Wendy Project.

Derby Dames / Boston Massacre logo

 some concepts

Even though (E) was not used, I'm excited to apply the same design to a different client for another project.

That's my favorite way to beat feeling bummed if a client doesn't go for my personal favorite - the idea just goes in the idea box for another time!  No sweat. :)

So happy the Boston Derby Dames asked me back for another logo!  They asked that the team mascot Pinchy the Lobsta be incorporated into the design.

I had lobster for the very first time this summer on Cape Cod.  Can't say I liked it.

Found out that lobsters used to be fed to prisoners on Cape Cod because they were considered the cockroach of the sea!  When Boston society started eating them they suddenly became very fashionable and expensive.

But it makes a real bad ass mascot!
